New Report: Deserted, Sudanese Survivors of Torture in Sinai
New Report by The Hotline for Refugees and Migrants: Sudanese Survivors of Torture in Sinai
In 2018, we identified a group of 18 Sudanese asylum seekers who entered Israel in 2011.
They all underwent torture in Sinai. Some of them were also held in slavery-like conditions
and trafficked between various smugglers. Members of the group described what they went
through in interviews upon entrance to Israel and in Detention Review Tribunal hearings.
Despite numerous meetings with Israeli authorities, the state never recognized this group as
victims of human trafficking and never referred to the torture they underwent. The state failed
to identify their trauma or to provide them with any rehabilitation or treatment.
